Australian education consists of 3 basic levels. Primary caters for children from kindergarten to grade 6, Secondary is next level from Form 1 to form 6 and ends with matriculation or High School Certificate. This Certificate may admit students to one of the universities. Admission depends on the result achieved, as there is a cut off point at various levels depending on the subject applied for. Admission levels also vary from one university to the other. More prestige Universities demand higher High School Certificate marks. Tertiary education includes universities and other technical and training colleges. These may offer degrees, diplomas and certificates. Australia has combination of private and public education providers at each education level. There are also number of live in colleges.

There are number of students’ visas available to suit just about every situation. From elementary English language study (ELICOS) through School Sector that covers primary and secondary education to Vocational Education Training which covers various level certificates and diplomas. This group should also include Non Award section that does not lead to any formal qualification.
In tertiary section there are Higher Education classes that provide for university degrees, graduate certificates and diplomas. In addition also Postgraduate Research class providing facility for masters’ and doctorate degrees.
There is a special provision visa that allows a parent or close relative to remain in Australia with under age student as a guardian. This is only available until the student reaches the age of 18 years.

Foundation courses and intensive English courses are usually covered by the main visa. Most of the visas allow limited employment.
Professional year that involves specified course and combines work/study is catered for by the graduate visa.

Generally students after finishing their study (Degree, Diploma and above) can apply for any skilled visas, providing they satisfy point test criteria or obtain a sponsor. For those who may still fall short there a number of temporary visas that allows them to gain experience and improve English language so they may be able to satisfy point system criteria.
