General Skilled Migration
There are 3 visas in this category, permanent and temporary. Some are points test based visas. Selection of occupations that qualify for some of these visas is limited. Expression of interest may be also required and application can then be lodged when invitation is received.
This group of visas does contain a specific visa aimed at graduate students in Australia, by offering them opportunities for remaining here for 18 months after completion of their study to gain work experience and/or qualify for one of the other skilled visas. -
Sponsored/Nominated skilled migration
This selection of visas is for skilled workers who are either sponsored and/or nominated by employers or State/Territory Governments. Selection of occupation in this group is much wider. There is extensive variety of visas in this group and include; Permanent and temporary visas, regional visas that require applicants to reside in regional area, All State/Territory sponsored/nominated applicants also have to reside in sponsoring State/Territory for stipulated time. A number of employment conditions are also imposed on these visas.Point test applies only for applicants nominated/sponsored by State/Territory Governments and/or relatives. Expression of interest also has to be lodged prior for these visas and invitation to apply received, except for employer sponsored/nominated visas. Specific requirements related to these visas are English level and relevant qualifications.
Permanent visas in this category can generally be applied for after being holder of temporary (provisional) visa for certain time, usually 2 years, though in some cases application for permanent skilled visa can be made.Employers and sponsors have access to Expression of Interest data on Skill Select and can select prospective employees through this venue.
